Under the Microscope: Conventional IVF
Here is a video of conventional IVF being performed. You can see the sperm swimming in the bottom of the dish while the egg and cumulus cells wait patiently for them. Note the difference in size between the egg and sperm.
We had a debate around whether the egg picks the sperm or the sperm picks the egg. One hypothesis is that the egg chooses which sperm will enter using a receptor relationship. Another hypothesis is that the first sperm that reaches the egg, wins. Most studies (and our data included) show no difference in outcome between embryos fertilized by conventional IVF or ICSI. This suggests that its simply a matter of chance and timing as to which sperm arrives first.
When considering IVF vs ICSI, remember that there is no "best" option for everyone. An individualized approach is always encouraged.
